Asia Spotlight: Indonesian trio TheOvertunes on working with family and bringing new colours into their music

Estimated: 5 mins  reading

There’s nothing like the bond of family. There’s an irreplicable level of understanding that goes beyond words, something just short of telepathy—just look at TheOvertunes

Comprising brothers Mada Emmanuelle, Reuben Nathaniel, and Mikha Angelo, the Indonesian pop band has a knack for making calming, intimate tunes that speak to the soul, much ado to their innately harmonious music-making process.

“Lately, we’ve had collaborations with other artists and it has helped us realise and appreciate the qualities that have helped us grow strong as a band of siblings,” TheOvertunes shared with Bandwagon

“One of the many things we often take for granted is just the sheer almost telepathic understanding we have with each other when playing guitar and singing harmonies with each other - it doesn’t come as naturally with other collaborators.”

But, of course, like with any family, getting in tune with each other requires a lot of time, patience, and compassion.

“We’d like to think we also work well as brothers. It hasn’t been the easiest to reach this point of understanding each other on and outside the bandstand, but at one point in the past we agreed to prioritise being brothers before being bandmates in life - and that perspective has been helpful to us, especially when it is most needed in the more tense and heated moment we experience,” said the trio.

Mada, Reuben, and Mikha all started making music at a young age, learning how to play various instruments throughout their childhood and taking inspiration from bands like Muse and D’cinnamons. Naturally, their curiosity to start making and writing their own songs took over, leading them to play around on Garageband and share their original music online.

Introspective and serene, TheOvertunes make that kind of music that make you pay extra close attention to life’s simplest phenomena. Often backed by an acoustic guitar and soothing harmonies, the band’s lyrics are often a combination of all their individual experiences, with each of them adding in their own unique perspective.

“Our fans has often described our music as calm, soothing, and lyrically deep. We definitely has no problem with that description, and we think that they definitely has a point,” they said.

“We started out learning and writing music on acoustic piano and guitars, and have long had to deal with performing with just these instruments and our voices, so we’ve always tried to make the best use of this minimal setup. I think that’s how the signature instrumentation and vocal harmonies of the band came to be - simply because we’ve had to use the resources we had as creatively as we could and can.”

Throughout the years, TheOvertunes have grown to be one of Indonesia’s most exciting acts. It’s been a surreal ride for the trio, having created some of their best memories making music together.

“Definitely a lot are memorable. Or maybe, we should put it, that the whole, not the parts are most memorable and meaningful for us. We’ve performed in a lot of unique and memorable events, been to many national awards, and met our musical heroes, and it just seems impossible to pick one without having the other immediately stick out as genuine competition. Haha,” they said.

When asked what they were most grateful for, the answer was unanimous—their fans.

“We won’t forget though all the fans that have made this journey worthwhile and deeply meaningful to all three of us. They’re the best,” said the ‘I Still Love You’ act.

“A lot of them have grown up with us and our music. Now we get to see them realising their dreams, working in jobs they worked so hard for, and growing into really wonderful people and friends. It touches us deeply to see them still supporting us in the works that we do.”

Most recently, TheOvertunes released their first single in two years. Titled ‘Write Me Another Song’, the acoustic song tracks a compelling love story with a songwriter.

“The song tries to capture a certain relational dynamic between a person with his significant other - that happens to be a songwriter,” they shared.

“So this person wants to understand the minds and hearts of the partner by asking her to write another song for him. We find that this dynamic often happens in artistic couples - and not just musicians, but artists of all kinds too.”

The single marks a new era for TheOvertunes, one that’s set to see a fresh set of colours from the brothers especially coming from a dull two pandemic-stricken years.

“We’ve been waiting for this moment for quite some time. I feel that we really learned a lot during this time. But mainly not to take anything for granted, not least the fact that we still have a music career or a life at all,” said the trio.

“There’s a big chance of us three bringing in new colours to our music palette. That excites me. We’re hoping for a fresh restart. A whole new musical and visual experience for our loyal listeners. We wanna push every single idea to its maximum if possible. Can’t wait to see how our plans and things pan out.”

For the rest of the year, TheOvertunes have a slew of exciting projects in the works. Channeling the themes of their current life and exploring internal of their minds, the band hope to release new music soon that they hope their fans can be proud of.
