Now, with the release of her EP, she further captivates fans with stunning visuals in her new music video for the title track. Bandwagon got the chance to catch up with the unstoppable YEJI herself to dive into her thrilling solo adventure and uncover what’s in store.
How does your approach to music and performance differ when working solo compared to being part of ITZY?
I think I spent a lot of time thinking about how to choose a title track that would best reflect the team’s color when selecting it with the members. But as a solo artist, I wondered how I could show who I truly am, so I think I took some time to think more deeply about myself.
Your previous solo track ‘Crown on My Head’ showcased a rock and roll influence. Can we expect a similar musical direction in your upcoming solo album, or are you venturing into new genres?
This time, I wanted to show a different kind of charm from my previous solo song, so I tried the synth-pop genre. When I first heard 'Air,' I personally felt a dreamy vibe, but as the energy picked up in the middle, I thought, 'This is the song!' So, I think you can expect a different kind of charm from this album.
How has preparing for your solo debut contributed to your growth as an artist and individual?
Being a solo artist is hard. It made me realize that it’s not something just anyone can do, so I reflected on myself and thought I should work even harder. I think I put a lot of effort into filling something 100% by myself, whether it was singing or dancing. I still feel like I’m growing in those areas.
Can you share any personal experiences or stories that have inspired the songs on your solo album?
I think I reflected on the image of myself deeply immersed in something. As someone who really loves this job, when I thought about what I wanted to show in my first album, I wanted to express myself fully absorbed in dancing and singing, unable to pull myself out. That thought was the inspiration.
Your performances are always full of energy. Can we expect a signature dance style in your solo debut, and how does it compare to ITZY’s choreography?
ITZY's performance is a combination of five members, and it’s a performance that has energy and a structure only the group can do. As a solo artist, since I'm performing alone, I think my personal color will be more clearly visible than in group activities. Since I’m doing everything alone that we used to share in the group, I feel like there are more things I need to pay attention to.
For you, what would make this solo debut feel truly successful? Is it about charts, fan reactions, or personal artistic fulfillment?
The important takeaway from this activity for me is my personal satisfaction with my work. I realized that it's crucial to focus on how hard I worked and whether I did it without any regrets to be able to satisfy my fans. I believe that if I’m confident in myself, those who listen to my music will also understand my message. And as I start to feel even more affectionate towards my own work, the activities become more enjoyable. So, no matter what the outcome is, if I give my best effort until the end of the remaining activities, I think that will make this an even better successful activity for me.
Looking ahead, what are your aspirations for your solo career, and how do you envision it complementing your work with ITZY?
Although I’m just starting as a solo artist, I believe everything is possible because I am a part of ITZY. I don’t think the fact that I’m ITZY, will ever change. With that pride, I will continue to perform on stage, and as solo YEJI, I will do my best in my own place to show everyone a good performance and great music. I will keep working hard as ITZY YEJI, so please give lots of support! Thank you!
