2020 marks Singapore’s 55th birthday. Every year the nation gathers for her biggest celebration, the National Day Parade. The presence of COVID-19 meant that the usual evening outdoor event of more than 30,000 people had to be cancelled. Yet from these limitations came forth creative expressions and fresh interpretations. The usual parade highlights were dispersed around the island with parachutists landing directly in neighbourhoods, members of parliament joining in their consituencies' virtual celebrations via video calls, and fireworks at 10 different estates. 

The NDP 2020 Evening Show, held indoors at The Star Performing Arts Centre for the 1st time, sparkled in this new and intimate setting. It was themed around inspirational stories of frontline workers, COVID-19 patients, and enterprising Singaporeans during this pandemic. Directed by Royston Tan, many of Singapore's top artists across genres and races came together for a multi-cultural performance that has become a unique mark of this nation.
