Actor, singer, songwriter, and dancer, Alfred Sun has multiple hats on at once.
From training in Korea, Japan, and Taiwan, dancing, acting, and now, singing and producing, the Singaporean act has been busy achieving many things. As the only independent contestant in the Chinese YOUKU 2020 boy group reality competition show, “We Are Young”, Alfred has shown his potential as an artist and an individual, making fans excited for what he has in store for the future.
Licensed with RELE, Alfred is finally releasing his debut single, 'VAMPIRE', a dance track that speaks about Alfred's personal desires to start another chapter of his life as an artist.
Bandwagon sat down with Alfred to talk about his new single, past experiences, being introverted, and future aspirations for himself.
Hi Alfred, what have you been up to lately?
Hello Bandwagon, I’ve been busy with the post-production of the 'VAMPIRE' Music Video!
Congratulations on your debut single, ‘Vampire’! This is a song that you co-wrote, could you tell us what message you wanted to say through ‘Vampire’?
Thank you! I’ve always thought about what is the message that I’d want to share through my debut single and I think the concept of self-captivity, self-growth, and rebirth is exactly that. A song that encapsulates and celebrates new beginnings.

You mentioned in an Instagram post that the album took 10 months! What were some challenges you faced while working on the song, especially it being your first original track?
One of the things I struggled most with was self-doubt. It has taken me many years to finally put out a Single, so I really wanted it to be the best it could be while making sure that the song is composed to play to my strengths. Another challenge that I faced was trying to push boundaries with the visuals/quality of production whilst trying to maintain a realistic budget.
What were some of the memorable moments you had while making the song?
I really enjoyed being creatively involved in the pre-production. From storyboarding to getting my friends to take measurements for my coffin carpentry fabrication to the dance choreography and practices; Exploring different formations and imagery with my dancers.
You’ve trained in Korea, Taiwan, and China — how was your time training abroad? What were the differences between each of the places?
The key difference between these places was mainly my mindset at the point in time. When I was training in Korea, everything was new to me and it was really exciting, there was a lot of adrenaline. When I moved to Taiwan, it was an independent training situation where I had to constantly be self-disciplined to practice. That was also when I started doubting my capabilities and a period of time where I felt I had to pick myself up very often. My practice period in China was the most intense as I felt that I was fighting against time with my age. That really forced me to push my boundaries and truly witnessed my growth over the period of 6 months.
You also came in the top 30 in the Chinese YOUKU 2020 boy group reality competition show, “We Are Young” as the only non-agency represented contestant. Could you let us in on your thoughts looking back?
I am really proud of what I have achieved in ‘We Are Young’. I was the only non-agency represented contestant that got to stand in the A-zone for our theme song filming (there were only 22 of us in that zone) and looking back, I think my hard work really paid off and it felt good to be recognised. Knowing that I did all I could as an independent trainee, I am immensely thankful for that opportunity.
You’ve also participated in a few acting projects, such as ‘Summerdaze’ and the Taiwanese series ‘HIStory3: Make Our Days Count’. Could you share how those projects came about? What are your goals for acting now?
Being a very emotionally sensitive individual, I’ve always found acting a very fun way to express myself. It is like a moment of escapism where I’d be allowed to take on a different character and understand the range of emotions that a person can go through. I’d love to continue exploring acting opportunities and hopefully be able to star in a movie one day!
On top of singing and acting, you also dance. How did you start getting into dance?
I’ve always been passionate about arts and music since I was a kid. After I picked up piano when I was 10, I knew I wanted to have more musical skills but was too shy to audition for vocal CCAs. So I eventually auditioned for dance instead and started dancing when I was 18 years old.

Going back to ‘Vampire’, how do you feel about finally releasing your first music single after 5 years?
It is honestly a mix of emotions; I feel anxious, exhilarated, at the same time, accomplished. I cannot wait to share something so important to me to the world, yet there will always be a part of me who is still that shy introverted boy I was when I was 20, who struggles with self-confidence. Worrying that something I’ve poured my heart into will not be well received.

Finally, what are your plans for 2022? What do you wish to say to your fans for your upcoming release and the year?
In 2022, I am hoping to really put myself out in the scene to learn and create more. I wish to be as transparent as I can in my journey and have my fans witness my growth with each music and work that I put out. I also want to take this opportunity to thank each and everyone that has been by my side (even those that have been silently observing), because their support is the one thing that has encouraged me to be brave and continue fighting for my dreams. Thank you for reminding me that there are no dreams too foolish. I hope that you will all enjoy VAMPIRE and continue to stay by me as I continue to grow.
