They always say that high risks mean high rewards and Mrs M agrees. Being a woman in a scene dominated by the voices and stories of men is a rough road, but the Mongolian rapper is never one to back out from a good fight.

Forging her own way through Mongolia’s hip-hop scene, Mrs M has grown to be one of the country’s most prolific hip-hop artists and one of the region’s most sought-out acts.

“I feel like I’m on a mission—with no doubt, with no going back. I just have to bring out what hides inside me and work with it. If we don’t take risks we never grow, and that’s my mission now,” she tells Bandwagon

Mrs M was always fated for music one way or another, having grown up with an actress for a mom and a rapper for a dad. Growing up, she moved around different music styles and genres before coming to her own sound.

“I started with playing drums in a rock band and then I learned guitar, and slowly knew I could write songs and sing. I think that you should try everything until you know where you belong. And here I am,” she says.

Taking inspiration from the likes of Erykah Badu, the multitalented act is now most regarded for her signature style that intertwines smooth soul, groovy hip-hop, and funky trap beats.

Mrs M emerged onto the scene in 2015 and found almost immediate success with her track ‘Tsor Gants (My Only One)’ with producer Lil Thug-E

Three years later, she continued to rise through the region’s music ranks with the release of her viral hit ‘Bang’, which was later included as part of B2 Music’s Vibe Presents: Urban Asia Vol. 1 alongside the likes of Jackson Wang, Bohan Phoenix, Higher Brothers, and more.

While it’s her infectious beats and catchy hooks, regardless if they’re in Mongolian or English, that first grab your attention, the ‘Goy Te’ hitmaker’s music truly shines on its lyrics that are centred around a story of strength and fearlessness.

“I always wanted to tell a story or have a message for people who listen to my music. There has to be something to take away, you know,” she says.

This comes as part of Mrs M’s mission to show the world the sound of Mongolian hip-hop and the power of female rappers.

When it comes to Asian music, we often don’t look at Mongolia but with a bustling and vibrant scene, it’s definitely not one to discount, especially when it comes to hip-hop. Founded on a long and rich history, Mongolia’s hip-hop scene tells a story of a country coming to its own and a generation embracing anew.

“Hip-hop is big, and most of the young people listen to it. Hip-hop songs top the charts all the time,” Mrs M explains.

Hoping to call attention to Mongolian hip-hop on a global scale, Mrs M’s music has always been about having pride in yourself and where you’ve come from.

“Now I have a platform, so I also have a responsibility to enlighten my people through hip-hop music with important messages, and at the same time spread the culture. This has always been important in Mongolian hip-hop,” she says.

"I want to let the world know who I am and where I come from!"

Beyond that, the ‘Boroo’ act also hopes to lead the way for female rappers, wanting to show everyone that women have the power to build their own kingdom.

“I’m all about female empowerment, we have our own special energy, and we need to stay true to it. I always tell my girls that they must be strong and build their own empire,” she says. “As a Mongolian, I wanted to show my pride in my people, and showcase my beautiful female fighters as role models for the next generation.”

Mrs M’s most recent release, ‘Daughter of Khan’, is a great reflection of her mission. Taking inspiration from the Genghis Khan, the single sends the message of being proud of your lineage and finding strength in how far you’ve come.

“I’m celebrating how far I’ve come, how far Mongolian women have come, and ultimately how far we have come as a country,” she shares.

“It’s really a song for all the strong and beautiful daughters of Khan all around the world—you know we are all meant to be Kings and Queens. So, it’s up to you to choose who you wanna be. That’s the message.”

‘Daughter of Khan’ comes as Mrs M’s first release under Warner Music Asia’s Asiatic Records and also the first track from the label’s upcoming EP [asiatic.wav volume 1]
