In the remainder of 2023, and into the new year, Singapore will host a whole lineup of musicals derived from our childhood favourite books and films. If you’re in need of a refreshing source of entertainment, here are four iconic musicals you should catch in the Lion City.
MAMMA MIA!
As the iconic ABBA song goes, “Mamma Mia! Here we go again.” The critically acclaimed smash hit musical will be making its return to Singapore soon, with over 65 million people having indulged in the musical worldwide.
BANDWAGON TV
Described as the sunniest and most electrifying musical, MAMMA MIA! tells the tale of a young girl named Sophie who seeks to find her father before her wedding day. Set on an island in Greece, Sophie finds herself face to face with three men from her mother’s past who could possibly fit the bill.
Gear up for a magical night of over 22 timeless hits by Swedish pop supergroup ABBA, such as ‘Dancing Queen’, ‘Money, Money, Money’, and ‘Mamma Mia’.

Into the Woods
You may be familiar with the American musical fantasy film, Into The Woods, and its renowned casting which includes Meryl Streep, Anna Kendrick, Emily Blunt, and James Corden. Released in 2014, the film was inspired by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s 1987 musical of the same name. This year, you will be able to experience the beauty of fairy tales and magic once again in a Singaporean adaptation of the swoon-worthy film and captivating musical.
Directed by Tracie Pang, Artistic Director of Pangdemonium Theatre Company, the musical is immersed in the story of how Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, Jack, and the Baker, venture on a quest to save their world from the wrongdoings of the villains.
Get ready for a night filled with enchanting soundscapes of the late Sondheim, blending with Lapine's clever and humorous narrative in this subversive mash-up of our most cherished fairy tales. Set to impart valuable lessons about growing up, growing old, relationships, and more, this musical fantasy will surely keep you spellbound for the entire night.

Madagascar The Musical
Alex the Lion, Marty the Zebra, Melman the Giraffe, and Gloria the Hippo, are heading to Singapore.
Adapted from the DreamWorks animated motion picture, Madagascar The Musical tracks the adventures of four animal companions as they escape from their residence at Central Park Zoo in New York and embark on an interesting journey to the eccentric paradise of King Julien's Madagascar. Having spent his life in the comfort of being served regular meals and fronted by admirable visitors, Marty feels an itch to escape the captivity and explore the world.
Madagascar The Musical will be playing at Singapore’s Esplanade Theatre from 18 to 28 January 2024. Tickets are available on Esplanade’s official website or SISTIC, with prices starting from SGD 48.

Matilda the Musical
Matilda the Musical brings to life the story of Matilda Wormwood, a gifted young girl with telekinetic abilities. Her neglectful parents have encouraged Matilda to discover her profound passion for reading and learning, which is recognised by her caring and supportive teacher from Crunchem Hall Primary School, Miss Honey.
With an impressive agglomeration of 101 international awards, including 24 for Best Musical, Matilda The Musical has been captivating spectators in London's West End and worldwide for more than a decade.
Matilda is based on the works of Roald Dahl, a renowned British author of children’s literature. He rose to fame through his acclaimed works, including James and the Giant Peach, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and Fantastic Mr. Fox, all of which have been adapted into films.
