Disney and Pixar’s animated film Turning Red recently dropped on 11 March, taking the world by storm with the story of 13-year-old Mei Lin (voiced by Rosalie Chiang) who experiences her coming of age and struggles to manage her emotions lest she turns into a fluffy red panda.

Sparking discussions on the film’s transparency on growing up, puberty, and hormonal changes, Turning Red also showcases another integral part of being a teen — fawning over celebrities. The movie features a fictional boy band, 4*Town, whose discography, choreography, and members, the main teenage cast are obsessed with.

BANDWAGON TV

4*Town is inspired by the likes of Jonas Brothers, BTS, and One Direction, who have had tremendous success and mighty fanbases in the respective years of their activity. In the same way, the young characters in Turning Red exemplify the relatability for audiences with their endearing fan culture.

With their original songs written by famed sibling duo FINNEAS and Billie Eilish, who recently won Outstanding Original Song for their official soundtrack to the latest James Bond instalment No Time To Die, here’s a rundown of the members of 4*Town and the voices behind the figures!

Robaire (Played by Jordan Fisher)

The leader of the band, Robaire is described as a true all-rounder by having the ability to sing and dance. On their website, the teen pop star is even affirmed for his capability to go solo in the future, speaking for the singer’s true talent prowess. Voiced by familiar Disney star, Jordan Fisher (To All The Boys: P.S I Still Love You, tick, tick…BOOM!) is also a well-known face on Broadway, having been cast for roles in Hamilton and Dear Evan Hansen

Aaron T. (Played by Topher Ngo)

Acting as the ‘mood-maker’ of the five-piece, ‘T’ is characterised as “acrobatic, fast-talking, and a natural comedian”. Aaron T. (not to be confused with 4*Town’s other member, Aaron Z.) is the band’s bass singer with vivacious energy. Outside of playing the bubbly member, Topher Ngo is better known for putting out vocal and bass covers on his YouTube account.

Jesse (Played by Finneas O’ Connell a.k.a FINNEAS)

Shocking fans over the revelation of Jesse's character having two kids, the blonde heartthrob has perhaps the most extensive backstory out of all the members. The character is also modelled to the closeness of celebrities like Justin Timberlake and Nick Carter from NSYNC and Backstreet Boys respectively. The pretty boy singer is also the oldest out of the band members, with an art background in ceramics. Voiced by award-winning singer-songwriter-producer, FINNEAS requires no introduction and is responsible for hits like ‘Let’s Fall In Love For The Night’, his sister’s Grammy-nominated track ‘Bad Guy’ as well as all of the original songs sung by 4*Town. The 24-going-on-25 year old singer recently also unveiled plans for his latest release ‘Naked’, coming out on 25 March

Tae Young (Played by Grayson Villanueva)

In Turning Red, viewers are treated to heaps of diversified representation from Priya (voiced by Maitreyi Ramakrishnan) to Abby (voiced by Hyein Park). Similarly, within 4*Town, Tae Young creates variation as a Korean member and is a nod to the rising Hallyu wave with global stars like BTS, EXO, and Seventeen leading the pack. The youngest member of the fictional boy band is introduced as a tender-hearted individual who has a passion for wildlife rehabilitation. SAG-AFTRA performer and multi-talented vocal arranger and producer Grayson Villanueva voices the character.

Aaron Z. (Played by Josh Levi)

Last but not least, suave, stoic, and “a little shy”, Aaron Z. rounds the band up as the main dancer who leads them to create synchronised performances on stage. Voiced by The X Factor finalist Josh Levi, Turning Red marks the Houston-based singer’s first time lending his voice for a film character. Most recently, the genre-fluid 21-year-old released a live version of his latest release ‘NASA’.
