“Trot is now!” (뽕짝은 바로 지금이야)

On 26 December, SEVENTEEN have finally released their hilarious take on their own recent blockbuster single, ‘음악의 신’ (God of Music): ‘경음악의 신’ (God of Light Music).

The track was originally from a 2-part special for Going Seventeen, their hit variety series. The episodes, also named ‘경음악의 신’ (God of Light Music), coincided with the release of SEVENTEENTH HEAVEN and its title track.

In the special, Pi Cheolin, Dino’s recurring nosy ahjussi character, is setting up a new agency, BOMG, looking to debut acts and go global with them (all the way to Antarctica). He enlists the help of famed SEVENTEEN producer 우PD (Woozi) to come up with a vehicle to stardom for his trainees, Charles (Jeonghan), Leo (Wonwoo), and Seokmini 석민이 (DK), along with the backup chorus 남자네들 (Menfolk) (Joshua, Hoshi, The8) and a recording studio ghost (Vernon).

That track would become known as the trot tune, ‘God of Light Music’.

Trot (a.k.a. ppongjjak 뽕짝) is a genre of Korean popular music that originated in the early 20th century, influenced by many styles of Korean, Japanese (e.g. enka), American and European music.

Featuring lyrics by Ji Woogae 지우개 (Korean for “eraser”) (Mingyu) and Young Feel 영필 (likely after famous trot singer Cho Young Pil) (Jun), the parody track’s highlights includes a shoutout to HYBE founder and chairman Bang “Hitman” Si Hyuk and lines like “초등학교 친구 이름은 박지예 / 화가 나면 벽에 얼굴을 박지 yeah” (My elementary school friend’s name is Park Jiye / When I get mad, I smash my face on the wall, yeah).

The release also comes with a trot remix of the original 'God of Music'.
