ITZY exude confidence and charisma in BORN TO BE Singapore concert —gig report

ITZY have proven themselves as ‘UNTOUCHABLE’ performers once more at last Saturday’s Singapore concert.

Yeji, Ryujin, Chaeryeong, and Yuna graced the Singapore Indoor Stadium on the 6th of April for their second world tour, BORN TO BE, a little over a year after their CHECKMATE tour.

As if watching ITZY live wasn’t a treat in itself, the group surprised MIDZYs (fans of ITZY) with an added element that made their performance even more electrifying – a live band. The band's presence intensified ITZY's songs and added an extra layer of excitement to their set.

BANDWAGON TV

Aside from their powerful and charismatic energy on stage, ITZY displayed their down-to-earth personality and sincerity during their (many) fan interactions, which allowed MIDZYs to connect with the group on a personal level.

The atmosphere in the stadium was charged with excitement. It was evident that ITZY’s songs resonated with a diverse audience – from teenagers, young children, and adults. Many fans were proudly sporting ITZY's merchandise and could be seen holding their signature light rings.

Just a short preview of their ‘Untouchable’ music video was enough to elicit screams and cheers from the crowd. As more of their hits played in the background, the excitement grew, with 'DALLA DALLA' remaining a fan favourite as many sang and grooved along to the song.

BORN TO BE performers

ITZY began their performance with their hit song 'BORN TO BE'. All eyes shifted to the group in anticipation as they confidently strode onto the stage, accompanied by the powerful beats of the drum. The band created a richer, more dramatic soundscape that perfectly complemented the opening of ‘BORN TO BE’ in the best way possible.

Clad in black outfits with red accents and boots, the group performed their choreography with big smiles. Fans erupted in screams and cheers, signalling the start of an electrifying show.

“We’re happy to be back in Singapore after 1 year and 3 months,” Chaeryeong exclaimed. The crowd screamed in unison, clearly sharing the same sentiments.

“I think you can already feel our energy from the title ‘Born to Be,’ Yeji said before affirming the crowd, “We will show you who ITZY are and what ITZY [can] do through this concert.”

As though on a mission to prove Yeji's statement right, the group delivered riveting performances for the rest of the night.

The introduction of 'WANNABE' seemed to foreshadow their upcoming solo performances. It started with a dance sequence that highlighted each member at different sections, with varying colours of strobe lights perfectly matching each of their auras. The crowds sang along to the lyrics “I don’t wannabe somebody. Just wanna be me, be, me,” in unison with vigour.

The ladies picked up the energy for their third act, delivering enthralling performances for 'UNTOUCHABLE', ‘Gas Me Up,’ and ‘Dynamite’. They were all smiles as they made their way down the platform singing along to ‘Psychic Lover’ which ended in a colour bout of confetti.

The group swiftly transitioned to ‘Don’t Give a What’ and their ever-so-iconic anthem, ‘LOCO', before heading into their fourth and final act.

As the electric guitar riffs played, the stage doors opened slowly to reveal the artists in silver studded outfits, all while the first note of ‘Not Shy’ dropped. Performing ‘CAKE’ and ‘Sneakers’ in high spirits, they waved to fans, displayed finger hearts, and teased them throughout the performances.

An air of palpable excitement filled the stadium as another burst of confetti was released, this time, in the form of red-coloured streamers.

"I was really enjoying myself but the time is coming..." Yeji hinted as the show was coming to an end.

The members continued to tease the crowd, urging them to cheer as loudly as possible if they wanted ITZY to continue their performance. Satisfied with the crowd's response, the group proceeded to perform 'Kill Shot' and 'Escalator'.

SOLO STAGES

One of the most memorable parts of the night was the solo stage performances, allowing the audience to revel in the individual artistry and characteristics of the members. During the CHECKMATE tour, the members covered songs from various artists in their solo acts. However, this time proved to be more thrilling as they showcased their very own songs.

Dressed in all-white, perfectly contrasting with the black outfits of the dancers, Chaeryeong whisked the audience away with her sultry voice for her single, ‘MINE’. The 3-way mirror and blue-illuminated stage perfectly encapsulated her ethereal energy.

Ryujin's stage set a completely different tone. She began her act seated on an armchair on the elevated platform. MIDZYs cheered loudly as she “smashed” the screen with her microphone stand. Dressed in a leather jacket and knee-high boots, Ryujin emanated an effortless swagger and confidence as she walked along the stage singing ‘Runaway’.

The strobe lights then turned pink and so did every other element on stage. Yuna, dressed in a pink mini dress and boots, began her ‘Yet, But’ performance in a pink-coloured hexagon-shaped carriage. Accompanied by fun props like a shopping cart decorated with pink fur, Yuna later revealed that her goal for her song was to “share her happy energy and smile” which she undoubtedly accomplished.

Yeji's stage was a true representation of what it means to be a leader. Following the beats of the drum, she sashayed across the platform with a charisma that almost seemed to say "I own this stage" before diving into ‘Crown On My Head’. Yeji radiated confidence and power, flawlessly executing her choreography while showcasing her impressive vocals.

MIDZYs take on the challenge

Before wrapping up the night, ITZY set up a fun and interactive game for their MIDZYs.

“When the music starts and

any MIDZY who’s chosen by the camera

Show us your UNTOUCHABLE DANCE moves

Like a true BORN TO BE ITZY.”

After a brief display of ITZY's dance practice video, the camera scanned the audience to select the lucky MIDZY. To my surprise, many MIDZYs jumped from their seats and danced enthusiastically, proving that just like the quartet, they are not shy. The crowd cheered and applauded supportively for the brave MIDZYs.

They even had a singing segment with the following instructions laid out:

Be energetic

Be enthusiastic

Be as loud as you can

The crowd did not disappoint, singing along flawlessly to both the Korean and English lyrics displayed on the screen. The final task of the game was to unlock the encore stage. Fans were asked to cheer loudly as the scale rose from 10% to 100% in response to the intensity of the cheers. MIDZYs successfully accomplished the mission.

FLY TOGETHER WITH MIDZY

The sentimental energy of the songs, ‘LOVE Is’ and ‘Be in Love’ was followed by one of the most heartwarming moments from the show – Singapore’s MIDZY fan video project. The video depicted a compilation of memorable moments of each member, coupled with heartfelt messages from their fans.

After the video, fans across the stadium held up fan-prepared banners that read "같이 BET ON ITZY 멀리 날아갈 수 있지 (Together, BET ON ITZY, we can fly forward together)"

MENT FOR MIDZY

The group took some time to convey their heartfelt messages to their fans.

“Thank you so much for coming all the way to see us and once again thank you so much for having so much fun with us and enjoying [yourselves] tonight. I’m really really happy tonight and I’ll take all these memories with me and never forget about it,” Yuna expressed. She beamed with pride as she acknowledged that the number of MIDZYs had increased each time they performed in Singapore, “Seriously as much as you BET ON ITZY, we’ll be even cooler. And next time we meet in Singapore, let’s meet at the even bigger concert hall. Thank you for this lovely video and thank you for today.”

Chaeryeong explained that watching the fans singing, dancing, jumping and enjoying themselves made her smile so much throughout their performances (even the cooler ones). “I really want to tell you that I was really really happy today,” she said with a sweet smile. “I really hope that today can be a memory that you can pull out whenever you have a hard day, to reflect on and give you even more energy for your day and move on. Thank you for today and we must come back again. Thank you, I love you!”

“I hope that today will be a memorable day for you guys and it will be memorable for us too. I’ve always wanted to tell you guys that I’m really thankful for the energy that every MIDZY in every country gave to us, I hope today you guys get my energy," Ryujin said. She cutely ended her speech, wishing everyone a "great, great, great, great, great night and a great, great, great, great, week and great, great, great, great, month,” and expressed her hope that ITZY could be a “cosy home” for MIDZYs.

Yeji started her speech with similar sentiments to Chaeryeong, “Seriously because of MIDZY I laughed so much that my jaw is hurting right now!” She mentioned that the phrase "These kinds of experiences make us who we are," from the fan project video, was still engraved in her mind and heart, “I keep thinking about it right now. In this moment, I keep thinking there is a reason why ITZY ran so fast and so hard to meet MIDZY.” Acknowledging that everything was made possible due to MIDZYs support, she thanked the crowd wholeheartedly for supporting, loving and cherishing them.

The concert came to an end with the group performing their last two tracks, 'Chillin Chillin' and 'DALLA DALLA'. As the final bits of the spectacle unfolded, MIDZYs across the stadium stood up and danced, basking in the moment. The third round of confetti was shot across the stadium, adding to the already vivacious atmosphere.

The sincerity of ITZY touched the hearts of their fans, bringing warmth to the concert. Though the end of the show was bittersweet, fans can find solace in the knowledge that they will have future opportunities to see the group perform live again. "We must come back," ITZY said.
