Lay Zhang is taking a step in a new direction.

For his latest full-length release, the multi-hyphenate sings entirely in English, working with collaborators like Lauv and MAX. Not a stranger to singing a foreign language, the multilingual artist has released music in Korean and Japanese, as well as his native Mandarin throughout the years. In STEP, Lay doesn't just let himself explore lyrically, he also takes the listener on a sonic ride, moving through different genres and sounds.

Bandwagon chats with the 'PSYCHIC' singer about STEP, his thoughts on Asian pop's place in the world, and staying true to his artistic vision.

You’re back with new music, your new album, STEP. Throughout your career, you’ve performed songs in multiple languages from Korean to Mandarin to Japanese. What made you decide it was time to release a full English album?

I’ve always wanted to connect with a broader audience and felt that releasing a full English album would be the best way to do that. It’s a new challenge and an exciting step in my career.

STEP is said to be the beginning of your new chapter. Tell us more about this new musical direction for you.

STEP represents a fresh start for me. It’s a blend of different genres and influences that I’ve gathered over the years. I wanted to create something that feels both familiar and new, something that resonates with my journey as an artist.

You’ve worked with a number of collaborators like MAX and Lauv for this new record. What was that experience like?

Working with MAX and Lauv was incredible. They brought their unique styles and creativity to the project, which helped elevate the music to a new level. Collaborating with them was a learning experience and a lot of fun.

With the emergence of more Asian artists in the global scene, how do you think pop music from Asia fits in with the rest of the world?

I think Asian pop music has a unique flavour that stands out globally. There’s so much talent and creativity coming from Asia, and it’s amazing to see it being recognized and appreciated worldwide. It’s a great time for Asian artists to shine on the global stage.

What’s the best thing you learned about yourself, as an artist and as a person, while making this album?

I’ve learned to trust my instincts and embrace new challenges. This album has taught me a lot about resilience and staying true to my vision. It’s been a rewarding journey of personal and artistic growth.
