Locked Down Entertainment on first vinyl compilation 'Locked Down Since 2002 Volume One' with Backspacer Records

Traditionally, the gift given on a 20th anniversary is porcelain but this is the music scene so it only makes sense for Locked Down Entertainment to push for plaka or vinyl.

Having been in the industry since 2002, the independent label LockedDown has been home to the biggest and most exciting rock, electronic, pop, and hip-hop acts in the country. They introduced listeners to the likes of Tarsius, Ciudad, Squid 9, Assembly Generals, and so many more, opening doors within the local scene to reach for the stars above.

Bandwagon caught up with LockedDown founder Jigger Divina to talk about Locked Down Since 2002 Volume One, partnering with Backspacer Records, and their next releases together.

First off—congrats on 20 years of Locked Down! How does it feel to have been in the industry and delivering Filipinos quality music for two whole decades?

Thanks, Kara. Thanks, Bandwagon. It’s just normal, still doing the same goal, which is to release music that inspires people. Hope to still deliver more quality music for a few more decades.

How did you select the songs that would make it into the Locked Down Since 2002 Volume One vinyl?

We’re on the assumption that we will release more volumes (so ambitious; and vinyl is limited to 10-11 tracks) so we mix old releases and current ones—that’s my part—then Yna De Leon (LD label head) adds new tracks from her LD signees.

How did this partnership between Locked Down and Backspacer Records come to be?

It started with Aidon Panlaqui of Monolog—he’s connected with Backspacer. He approached Yna and gave the idea of a Locked Down vinyl. Then Yna hooked us up. We had a great informal online meeting, I'm easy to talk to, so there.

Design-wise, how did you guys land with the idea of working with Raizel Go and pressing the compilation on transparent baby blue vinyl?

Raizel is our art partner for a long time, from gig poster designs to clothing to other art related stuff. She’s the one in mind already when the vinyl idea came in. We gave her freedom, we believe in her. She came up with the idea for a baby blue vinyl.

It's amazing to see more Filipino music getting pressed into vinyl! Tell us, what does it take to do this?

Yup. Another good time for Filipino music. We’re fortunate that Backspacer is there. We didn’t really have a plan to release vinyl until Backspacer approached us. So, have them as a partner. Look for funds or investors. Be patient (manufacturing takes time). Have a plan.

Are there any more Locked Down and Backspacer collaborative efforts fans can look forward to in the future?

Yes. Ciudad's vinyl is out. Then LD. Weld by Squid 9 will be next, then Flying Ipis' Give Ipis A Chance also. Then hopefully next volumes of LD.

Tarsius and Assembly Generals are coming soon as well. But with different partners.
