MAMAMOO celebrate their journey and friendship with MooMoos at Singapore leg of 'MY CON' world tour — gig report

There are some acts that you just have to catch in the flesh at least once in your life, and during their most recent visit to Singapore, MAMAMOO showed why they are one of them.

Having already dazzled fans in Seoul, Chiba, Hong Kong, Taipei, Bangkok, and Jakarta as part of their MY CON world tour, the South Korean girl group returned to Singapore on 8 February for the first part of their two-day reunion with Singaporean MooMoos

And just like all other long-awaited meetings between friends who have been apart for much too long, there was plenty to catch up on.

"It's been a while since we came to Singapore and we were kind of worried that you might have forgotten about us," said Hwasa, who was immediately assured by fans in The Star Theatre that this was not the case at all.

"But now I see that the whole [venue] is fully booked and that really fills up my heart," she continued.

Of course, no reunion is complete without gifts, and MAMAMOO came bearing a two-and-a-half-hour-long show that possessed both quality and quantity.

For their opening number, the quartet chose to go with '1,2,3 Eoi!', which made for a very fitting song to reintroduce themselves to fans with considering how heavily their name features in its lyrics. Known for their commanding stage presence, Solar, Moonbyul, Wheein, and Hwasa sang and moved with so much self-assurance that it only took seconds before the venue was filled with the screams of thousands of ecstatic fans.

Then, with 'Mr. Ambiguous', they took everyone back to 2014 — the year the world was introduced to them for the very first time. Although the track was released nearly a decade ago, it felt fresh thanks to the endless supply of energy that it received from the RBW act. The performance also delivered one of the night's most memorable moments, during which Moonbyul temporarily left the company of her members to unleash a sizzling live version of the funk-infused song's rap section.

Coming after that were two medleys — 'Um Oh Ah Yeh'/'Freakin Shoes'/'NEW YORK'/'Dingga' and 'Emotion'/'Funky Boy'/'You’re the Best'. Comprising condensed versions of tunes from various MAMAMOO eras, they felt like montages of sorts that traced the group's growth over the years and were great additions to the show.

Being able to simultaneously enjoy yourself and put on an excellent performance is one of the hallmarks of a great performer, something that was most visible during MAMAMOO's presentation of 'Taller than You' — a diss track in which the members poke fun at each other's heights. Screams within The Star Theatre quickly turned into laughter as MAMAMOO rapped playfully, giggled, and teased each other. Silliness may sound like an undesirable trait to have, but for Solar, Moonbyul, Wheein, and Hwasa, it is one of their biggest charms.

The biggest surprise that the group had planned for MooMoos was, without a doubt, their innovative spin on solo stages. Instead of having each member perform her own song, MAMAMOO switched things up by covering each other's tracks while donning each other's outfits. Solar kicked off the segment with Wheein's 'water color' before Hwasa took the stage with Moonbyul's 'Eclipse'. Following that, Wheein delivered a rendition of Solar's 'HONEY' while Moonbyul took on Hwasa's 'TWIT'.

An ingenious way to let each member showcase her talent while celebrating the work of another, the segment was a hit among all in attendance. Here's hoping that it returns in the group's future tours.

The remainder of the show was filled with even more hits, with the standouts being the reimagined versions of 'HIP', 'Egotistic', 'gogobebe', 'Starry Night', 'Wind Flower', and 'Paint Me' — all of which were featured on MAMAMOO's 2021 compilation album I Say Mamamoo: The Best.

You may have heard of the saying that goes "if it ain't broke, don't fix it', but as they performed the tracks, MAMAMOO proved that reinterpreting what already works can sometimes yield miraculous results. Take the remixes of 'gogobebe' and 'Paint Me', for instance. While the electrifying rock instrumentals of the former accentuated their confidence, the orchestral arrangement of the latter combined beautifully with their soaring vocals.

Speaking of their vocals, you would expect there to be some competition within a group with several powerhouse vocalists, but never once during the show did it feel as if Solar, Moonbyul, Wheein, and Hwasa were jostling for the spotlight. Instead, they always looked like four gifted and distinct individuals that perfectly complemented each other.

As the first night of MAMAMOO's Singapore stop approached its conclusion, the K-pop outfit made sure to acknowledge the rapturous reception from MooMoos in attendance and thank them for their friendship.

"Everything was perfect. Thank you. Steady pom pi pi!" exclaimed Solar.

"Previously, [when we were] in Singapore, we only had good memories. But based on today’s experience, we’re so assured that we’re only going to have good memories in Singapore, so thank you so much for those," shared Moonbyul.

MAMAMOO's MY CON world tour will continue in Kuala Lumpur and Manila this February.
