Manila Community Radio (MCR) is shining a light on a well-loved genre of music. 

With a lineup of emerging DJs and producers, the Filipino radio platform is set to host a showcase highlight budots, a grassroots genre of electronic music in the Philippines.

The showcase is set to happen on 29 April at an undisclosed location featuring artists like DJ Love, Teya Logos, Libya Montes, Showtime Official Club, Hideki Ito, T33G33, obese.dogma777, and Pikunin. Entry is free and interested attendees ages 18 and above can sign up for an invite here.

"It’s fascinating how budots kind of captures and represents us as a people, with its resilience, playfulness, and campiness,” says co-founder and MCR programming lead Jorge Wieneke V, also known as obese.dogma777. “Like other grassroots sounds across the globe – like Detroit techno, Chicago house, Indonesia’s dangdut and more – it feels like something the Philippines can truly call its own.”

The showcase comes after MCR recently won Broadcast Lab's Boiler Room grant, which aims to spotlight unseen music scenes, communities, and artists. 

"Manila Community Radio's proposal to bring greater visibility to a uniquely grassroots genre like budots – and envision its future – was authentic, creatively distinctive, and lovingly curated. As a fresh lens on alternative Filipino club culture, the grant's curator panel found it deeply deserving of financial support and a wider global audience," says Boiler Room creative producer Will Davenport.
