On The Record: Benjamin Kheng & Bea Lorenzo on soundtracks for first loves, that first kiss, breakups, and more

Ineffable heartbreak, tears you wish you could uncry, and a whole lot of anguish—these are just three out of a million things you go through after a breakup.

Healing is difficult. It could take ages but the best way to get through any hurt is to let yourself feel, accept, and move on. Go ahead and surround yourself with tubs of ice cream, chocolates, and all things deep fried. Or plug in your headphones and listen to Benjamin Kheng and Bea Lorenzo's 'Good For A Time'. Go on—pull up your sweatpants and give yourself a tight hug. It's time to un-break that heart.

For this edition of On The Record, Bandwagon caught up with Benjamin and Bea to share their all-time favourite songs that make lovebirds' hearts sing, that play in the background of heartbreak, and that they wish they'd written.

BANDWAGON TV

You're the protagonist in a rom-com. What's your theme song?

Ben: 'Hysteria' by Def Leppard. It’s the perfect coming of age theme song and something about '80s Glam Rock will always have a place in my heart.

Bea: 'With A Little Help From My Friends' by The Beatles. The friendships I have are the ultimate joy of my life. When I hear this song it’s hard for me not to think of how the people I share love and laughter with make life feel just like the movies.

Song to play when you're caught in the rain with your crush

Ben: 'Maybe I’m Amazed' by Paul McCartney. The Jem version is really solid too. I love the timelessness of it, the modulation, the thrill of losing yourself in love.

Bea: 'Be Be Your Love' by Rachael Yamagata. I’ve had this happen to me too many times. Hahaha. This is my admiring-from-a-distance-in-slow-motion song which might as well also be my hello-crush-wow-is-it-raining song.

Song to describe a first love/relationship

Ben: 'Friday I’m In Love' by originally by The Cure, but the Phoebe Bridgers version is stunning too. It perfectly paints the feeling of the rest of your week fading away, because all you care about is seeing him / her on the weekend.

Bea: 'Why Can’t I Breathe' by Liz Phair. I’m all-smiles always with this song. It sings about recklessly throwing yourself into love with no second thoughts—the way a first love should feel.

The perfect "first kiss" song

Ben: 'Places We Won’t Walk' by Bruno Major. I KNOW this is a song about grief and loss, but instrumentally, it’s too perfect. Also there’s something poetic about a first kiss set against a song about grief.

Bea: 'One And Only' by Teitur. A first kiss is basically a confession. And this song feels like it was written to accompany a love confession. Allow me to quote the line: "So you wanna be my friend, so you wanna be my lover? With you I do confess I can't be one without the other. That was hard for me to say, I hope I said it right. Whichever, come what may, you see I need to know tonight."

The perfect soundtrack for a break-up

Ben: 'Good For A Time' by Benjamin Kheng & Bea Lorenzo, because, reasons. A close second is 'Go My Own Way' from High School Musical because who doesn’t break up beside a hotel pool.

Bea: 'Never Leave Your Heart Alone' by Butterfly Boucher. I remember bus rides in high school, looping this on an iPod nano. It was the song that kept me company when I first learned to guard my heart.

The most heartbreaking song

Ben: 'This Woman’s Work' originally by Kate Bush, but the Maxwell version always gets me. The original lyrical intent was about the loss of a child during childbirth, but I remember seeing it on So You Think You Can Dance, choreographed by Tyce Diorio, reframed to be about the loss of his mother to cancer, and I can never sit through that video without crying.

Bea: 'She Used To Be Mine' by Sara Bareilles. When I discovered this treasure, I was in tears every single time singing or hearing it. The tone of regret here is so apparent and the resignation to losing her sense of self makes it one of the lonelier songs out there. Sara is a mad genius.

A break-up song you wish you wrote

Ben: A dead tie between 'I Can’t Make You Love Me' by Bonnie Raitt and 'Jealous' by Labrinth. Both articulating such simple but heartbreaking concepts with melodies that fit just perfectly.

Bea: 'Blower’s Daughter' by Damien Rice. I love everything about this. How he writes it, how he delivers it. From start to end it’s just raw pain and denial of the reality that his immense feelings for someone can’t be returned.

Song to play when you're ready to do it all over again

Ben: 'Wake Up' by Arcade Fire. One of the most cinematic songs in my opinion. Lyrically, just a beautiful piece on retrospect and acceptance. And it’s hard not to rock out when the chorus hits.

Bea: 'Mamma Mia' / 'Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!' / 'Dancing Queen' by ABBA. It’s hard to pick just one! There’s just something so empowering about ABBA’s songs. It’s a lot of allowing yourself to be silly and “out there” about love.
