The nominations for the 95th Academy Awards were announced on Tuesday 24th January where many films from Asian directors, producers, actors, and talents received deserving nominations.
Everything Everywhere All at Once achieved a historic high of four nominations in a single year. Daniel Kwan and along with his creative partner, Daniel Scheinert, collectively known as Daniels, received a total of 11 nominations for the Everything Everywhere All At Once movie. They are the fifth directing team to receive a nomination. Kwan is the 13th Asian director to receive both a directing and original screenplay nomination, as well as the third Asian person to be nominated for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay.
Michelle Yeoh received her first-ever Oscar nomination for Best Actress in a leading role, making her the first Asian woman to be nominated for the said award. Along with Jamie Lee Curtis, Stephanie Hsu was nominated for Best Supporting Actress while Ke Huy Quan was nominated for Best Supporting Actor.
Hong Chau, who plays Liz in The Whale with Brendan Fraser, was also nominated for Best Supporting Actress.
BANDWAGON TV
The hit song from the Telugu-language film RRR, 'Naatu Naatu' by MM Keeravani, Kala Bhairava, and Rahul Sipligunj, scored a nomination for Best Original Song. Also nominated is 'This is a Life' from Everything Everywhere All at Once, which was created by Mitski, David Byrne, and Ryan Lott. His band Son Lux was also nominated for Best Original Score.
Turning Red also landed the nomination for Best Animated Feature. This coming-of-age film tells a story of a Chinese-Canadian eighth grader, Meilin Lee who unexpectedly turns into a red panda and must learn how to navigate growing up, being a dutiful daughter. The movie also features a fictional boy band, 4*Town, whose discography, choreography, and members, the main teenage cast are obsessed with.
The 95th Academy Awards will take place in Los Angeles on Sunday, 12 March 2023.
