Ryuichi Sakamoto commemorates his 70th birthday with a special anniversary website and new single, 'Ieta'

Ryuichi Sakamoto turns the big 70 today!

On 17 January 2022, the renowned musician released a special website to celebrate his illustrious career throughout the decades.

The website features write-ups from fans, friends, and colleagues who will also be introducing their personal 10 favorites from Sakamoto, spanning from his 1978 solo album ‘Thousand Knives’ through to his compositions in 2021. It also contains his entire discography, new releases, and his profile, allowing fans and the public to get a deeper insight into the man who made a significant impact in the music scene. The site will be updated continuously throughout the year, beginning with artist Shinro Ohtake.

The revered Japanese singer, pianist, composer, record producer and actor has pursued a diverse range of styles as a solo artist, releasing revolutionary albums such as Thousand Knives and B-2 unit, contributing to the development of electro and hip-hiop music. He also collaborated with a plethora of musicians such as David Sylvian, Carsen Niccolai, Youssou N'Dour, and Fennesz. As a member of the electronic music band, Yellow Magic Orchestra, he pioneered the rise of electronic music alongside members Harumi Hosono and Yukihiro Takashi. 

As a film-score composer, Sakamoto has an Oscar, a BAFTA, two Golden Globe Awards, and a Grammy under his belt for his work on The Last Emperor, Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence, and The Sheltering Sky. 

Showing no signs of stopping, he will also be releasing the piano piece 'leta' digitally on 19 Janurary 2022, written for a television commercial starring Haruna Kawaguchi for the contact lens brand CREO.
