Based on Billy Wilder’s classic film noir, Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical version of Sunset Boulevard follows the tragic story of legendary silent movie star Norma Desmond. Discarded by Hollywood since the advent of "talkies", the faded thespian longs for a return to the siver screen. That's when she enters into a passionate and volatile relationship struggling screenwriter Joe Gillis, in a desperate bid to reclaim the limelight.
The meaty leading role in Sunset Boulevard has proven to be catnip for many legends - from the great Gloria Swanson in the seminal movie, to the likes of Patti LuPone, Betty Buckley and Glenn Close in subsequent stage adaptation over the last three decades. In a bonafide casting coup, this production of Sunset Boulevard stars none other than the world’s best-selling soprano Sarah Brightman in the iconic part.
Naturally, the West End and Broadway superstar more than ably pulls off the vocal dexterity required of such a massive role. And we expect nothing less from the original Christine in Phantom of the Opera. However, Brightman's acting performance and Webber's swinging jazz-inflected composition is at times dissonant with the tension and forlorn gravity underlining the story and its lead character.
Beyond the headliner, Sunset Boulevard's ensemble do more than enough to hold their own. The cast - including critically acclaimed actor Tim Draxl as Gillis, Robert Grubb as Max Von Mayerling, Ashleigh Rubenach as Betty Schaefer, Jarrod Draper as Artie Green, and Paul Hanlon as Cecil B. DeMille - all deliver proficient performances under the capable guidance of director Paul Warwick Griffin.
The highlight belongs to Sunset Boulevard's slick and stylish production that feels fluid, cinematic and atmospheric. The set and costume design by Morgan Large is spectacular, particularly Norma’s capacious yet crumbling mansion. In conjunction with Ashley Wallen's choreography and Kristen Blodgette's music supervision - the staging doesn't just dazzle, it fully immerses you in the time period.
Presented by Base Entertainment Asia, the Asia premiere of Sunset Boulevard will be running at the Sands Theatre, Marina Bay Sands until 23 February. Tickets can be purchased via Marina Bay Sands, SISTIC or Klook.
