While shopping at Cotton On at Bugis Junction, Singaporean rapper Subhas Nair overheard a blatantly derogatory remark casually thrown his way by a woman in the store. According to Nair, he had just entered the outlet when he heard a woman telling her son “鬼在后面” ("ghost is behind you") in Mandarin.

While he was unsure if the comment was directed at him at first, upon hearing the remark a second time, Nair decided to record a video of himself confronting her. The video of the incident was yesterday (24 October) the Instagram account of his sister Preeti Nair, better known as YouTuber Preetipls.

Though Nair tried his best to calmly talk to the woman and point out that her hurtful words were racist, the woman was evasive and attempted to walk away from the situation, refusing to even engage. Eventually, she asked her son to return the clothes he was perusing so that they could leave.

However, her son did indeed approach Nair to offer an apology on his mother's behalf by saying, "I'm sorry for her behaviour." He later continued, "I’m sorry that happened to you. It’s actually not right," before adding that he appreciated Nair standing up and speaking out.

When asked whether his mother had “a problem with brown people”, the young man replied that it was a “mentality” that unfortunately “cannot change”.
