There's no mentioning Thai hip-hop without THAITANIUM

Comprising DABOYWAY, Big Calo, KHAN, SDThaitay, and DJAYBUDDAH, the hip-hop group has been around since the very beginning of Thai hip-hop, seeing it grow from a bubbling underground movement to the globally recognised scene it is today. Laying down the foundation for the many artists that came after them, THAITANIUM are undeniably one of the most influential acts in Thai hip-hop.

Ahead making history at the first-ever Rolling Loud Thailand, we caught up with THAITANIUM to talk about the growth of Thai hip-hop, reuniting on a live stage, and what's next.

You guys had a big hand in shaping Thailand's hip-hop scene into what is is today. How is it seeing it grow throughout the years? What makes Thai hip-hop so special?

DABOYWAY: THAITANIUM has been around for 23 years and we've kind of seen it from—well, not kind of, we've seen it from the beginning. From a handful of people liking or listening to hip-hop to then creating hip-hop music in Thailand [ourselves] to selling CDs and then getting artists and developing artists throughout all [these] years. It's a proud moment today for Rolling Loud Thailand, for us.

KHAN: Yeah, man. We came a long way with Thai hip-hop, like right? [We're] so happy to see it.

Big Calo: I mean, when I first came to Thailand, it was literally one club per day where you could listen to hip-hop and now we're standing at Rolling Loud being in Thailand. So, to see how it levelled up that much, it's almost unimaginable man, it's crazy.

What makes Thai hip-hop special?

DABOYWAY: I think what makes Thai Hip Hop so special is the underground. Like, we can really say that all the hip-hop artists really start from nothing and make their way up, [they] level up. That's why I think the... what's the word—I forgot the word, but anyway, the underground scene in Thailand is what I think is the driving force.

You guys came back together last year, what is it like being back on stage together again? How was it preparing for Rolling Loud together?

DABOYWAY: It's like riding a bike, feels right at home, you know. We had our differences and straightened it out,  [communicated] as a family. We came together and now. we're doing exactly what we want to do. And we're having fun and we're enjoying pushing THAITANIUM and hip-hop forward.

Big Calo: Actually, we were hella busy this week so it was hectic—but it's good. It's good to come up with something special for the show, it has to be a little different because this is a huge-scale show. We want to give a little extra oomph.

DABOYWAY: We are ready to shut sh*t down. Rolling Loud Thailand, get ready for THAITANIUM.

What's next for THAITANIUM?

DABOYWAY: More live shows. We have a documentary in the works and we have a new business called THAITANIUM Power, it's an energy drink that we're pushing into the festival. Yeah, shout out to THAITANIUM Power helping develop new artists and new influencers and athletes through power. That's our thing right now.
