The retro horror thrills of Phantom Siita’s debut album ‘Girlhood Memories’: a track-by-track guide

It’s been less than a year into their debut, but J-pop rookies Phantom Siita already have the world’s attention. Made up of Mona, Miu, Rinka, Hisui and Moka - who won their spots in the group through an audition with over 4,000 participants - the five-piece quickly made waves when their first single ‘Otomodachi’ was featured on Spotify’s “Idol Pop Japan” playlist cover and sparked a viral dance trend on TikTok.

The music video for their second single ‘Just Wanna ×××× With You’, released this past July, was even bigger, surpassing over 1 million views in less than a month. Subsequently they also appeared as the opening act for Ado’s (who also produces their music) arena tour this summer, performing in front of gigantic crowds across Japan. Just last month they even held their first solo concert called Haine at the legendary Nippon Budokan.

Hailed for their unique “retro goth” aesthetic and on the precipice of their expansive Moth to a flame world tour kicking off in next month (which features a stop in Singapore on 21 January 2025 at the Capitol Theatre) we couldn’t resist taking the time to catch up with the fast-rising girl group. Specifically, we asked the talented quintet to discuss the creative process and vision behind their exceptional debut album, Girlhood Memories.

‘Just Wanna xxxx With you (キミと××××したいだけ)’

“This song expresses the mad love that is very much Phantom Siita. The cuteness and the madness of the chorus is the highlight. I personally had a tough time getting the solo part of the chorus where the instruments drop. With advice from Ado, I tried many times. I have put so much effort and thoughts into this so hope you can check it out!” - Mona

‘Otomodachi (おともだち)’

“This is our debut song and you can immerse yourself in the darkness of relationships. Everything from the recording to the video shoot were first time experiences for us, so I was really nervous but with Ado as our producer, we embraced ourselves as Phantom Siita and really started to feel the determination to move forward as a group.” - Miu

‘Devilish Girl (魔性少女)’

“As the title says, this song is about a devilish girl who is so confident about herself. I tried to create a vibe like you’re surrounded by the beautiful aroma of perfume. - Rinka

‘Conflicting (乙女心中)’

“I tried really hard to get the emotions through my vocals during the recording session of this song. Especially where the song goes from “さア、手を替え、品を替え” to “何もかも頂戴れ,” I adjusted the impact of the vocals to express the change of emotions. I immersed myself in the world of this song when recording.” - Moka

‘Hanabami (花喰み)’

“Mixed conflict, loneliness and emotions are expressed in this song. This is a song that all of us can really express the explosion of our emotions.” - Hisui

‘HANAGATAMI’

“Unlike other songs, ‘HANAGATAMI’ is about us at present. Saying goodbye to myself before becoming Phantom Siita and expressing our determination to move forward as Phantom Siita. I hope you receive our message.” - Hisui

‘Zoku Zoku (ゾクゾク)’

“I had the most difficult time at the recording session for ‘Zoku Zoku’ by far, especially the beginning part where it goes ”知ってますか?唇って内臓のはしっこなのよ.” It’s the opening of the song with impactful lyrics so I wanted to make sure I express the strength, creepiness and the beauty of this song in that phrase, and I wanted to really grab people’s attention there.” - Moka
