Said to be an auditory expedition that spans various genres and sounds similar to that of riding a Filipino jeepney, MAHAL——which translates to 'love' or 'expensive' in Tagalog—thematically explores the generational concerns and our relationship with technology. While the record sees Toro y Moi charting new musical territories, the artist pays recalls his previous works across its 13 tracks.
Beyond Salami Rose Joe Louis, MAHAL also features collaborations with Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Sofie, and The Mattson 2.
"I wanted to make a record that featured more musicians on it than any other record of mine,” Toro y Moi explains in a statement. “To have them live on that record feels grounded, bringing a communal perspective to the table.”
MAHAL is slated for release on 29 April via Dead Oceans. It follows 2019's Outer Peace and 2017's Boo Boo.
