Wave to Earth on their brand of music, favourite song to perform at VERY Festival, and what's next in 2023

While music is known to evoke all sorts of auditory responses, Wave to Earth’s Daniel Kim, John Cha, and Dong Q’s unique brand of music effortlessly runs the gamut of emotions from soft and whimsical to enthusiastic jazzy fervour.

23 August 2019 marked Wave to Earth’s beginnings with the release of their single ‘wave’. The Korean indie-rock band’s discography includes songs in English, and they are currently under the Korean Hip-hop/R&B label WAVY founded by Colde.

The trio is in a league of their own when it comes to impressing a festival crowd. We had witnessed their synchronicity as a band during their VERY Festival set and how they’ve diligently learned Thai words to communicate and close the gap between them and their fans. For their first overseas show, Wave to Earth certainly showed that they were an unstoppable force of music, easily garnering everyone’s attention from the moment they started to perform.

Boasting smooth low-fi sounds, the band have proven to be adept at making music that instantly leads listeners to reminisce about snug, soothing, and pleasant moments in their lives.

They shared: “We really want to make people listen to our music in a relaxed, comfortable way.”

Bandwagon caught up with the band before their VERY Festival performance to find out more about their music, their favourite song to perform onstage, and their experiences while preparing for their first overseas music festival.

Hi, Wave to Earth! For anyone who hasn’t had the pleasure of experiencing your music yet, how would you describe it?

We’re making new things that are, like, based on low-fi music and jazz music. So, we really want to make people listen to our music in a relaxed, comfortable way.

What are you excited about performing at VERY Festival?

It’s the first time for us to perform overseas, so we’re really excited to see the fans here and are looking forward to enjoying more with them.

As you've mentioned, this is your first time overseas, right? What's it like performing your mellow tunes outside of the country for the first time? How did you guys prepare for your performance?

The most important thing that we're thinking about is to take care of ourselves so we don't do a lesser job than we do in Korea. Because it’s our first time coming over, you know, with the flights there's a little bit of jet lag. So the first thing we’re thinking about is to just take care of ourselves and get ready for the performance.

If you were to choose the one song you love performing the most on stage, what would it be?

‘Surf’. We think that ‘Surf’ really fits the weather in Thailand and everything, and just the style of it. We’ve been enjoying a lot with that song, and... you’ll see.

With the new year approaching, what can we expect from Wave to Earth?

We are just preparing our next studio album of, like, around maybe 10 or 12 songs. Back in Korea, we are working hard in making that project. So, after that, maybe we could do some kind of Asian tour. Or maybe, yeah, come back to Thailand if possible.
