There’s nothing quite like the world of Owl City. The ever-expanding creative domain of singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Adam Young instantly welcomes all with its sunny harmonies, lush electronics, and lithe melodies. The creative architect of this place rode a veritable wave of inspiration in early 2014, rolling back to shore with his most expansive body of work yet—a series of releases throughout 2014 and 2015. His world just got even bigger and brighter… In the midst of a touring whirlwind in support of 2012’s The Midsummer Station, Young arrived at an important realization. He decided to tackle his most ambitious creative undertaking to date. “I wanted to try something new and get a steady stream of music out to the fans over the course of the two years,” he says. “It was a change of pace”. stories that collectively add up and tie together for the full-length.” As soon as he got off the road, Young made a conscious return to his roots. Holing up at home in Owatonna, Minnesota during early 2014, he feverishly began to write by himself, harkening back to early releases Maybe I’m Dreaming [2008] and Ocean Eyes [2009] in the process. “There was a lot of collaboration on the last album,” he explains. “I loved that, and I learned so much, but I wanted to get back to basics. I needed to isolate myself in the studio and get in the zone. This is quintessential Owl City. I worked hard to marry the original ‘old school’—if you could call it that—melodic influence from 2007 with the tips and tricks I’ve learned over the years as far as production goes. It’s a blend of old and new sounds. That’s the vision.” The outcome was a four song EP titled Ultraviolet, which released in June 2014. In October Young unveiled two new singles, “Tokyo” featuring burgeoning Japanese band Sekai no Owari and “You’re Not Alone” featuring the esteemed Britt Nicole, to hold fans over until the release of his new full-length. Personally, Young has grown into a prolific pop presence. His breakout single “Fireflies” from Ocean Eyes is certified six-times platinum, and it landed at #1 in 26 countries. Moreover, it’s generated sales of 10 million tracks globally. The Midsummer Station yielded the double- platinum smash “Good Time” featuring Carly Rae Jepsen, also a Top 5 hit in the U.S. Meanwhile, filmmaker Zack Snyder [Watchmen, 300] sought out Young to pen the theme song for Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole, while Disney tapped him for an original composition in the Academy Award-winning Wreck-It Ralph. His tunes have also been featured in The Croods, Veggietales, and Smurfs 2. Peers including Armin Van Buuren and Paul Van Dyk also reached out for collaborations. It always comes back to the same thing for Young though. “I want everybody to take away an uplifting vibe,” he assures. “Dig a little deeper and let the message resound. I hope people walk away with a sense of optimism. I’m always in my own world, and this is my way to invite everyone in.”
