The Upstairs Series by KULCHA

The Upstairs Series is an initiative by Kulcha, in creating a quality performance experience for both the artists and the audience via a series of showcases in unconventional cozy venues. It was conceptualized from the idea of creating and performing art in unconventional small venues, to give focus on the artists and their work rather the purpose of filling seats.

The series of showcases will feature collaborations between musicians and mixed media artists, most of whom have never been paired together before. The Upstairs Series will encourage conversations to be started, and progress on well after the first performance.

This October, we have invited Suhaili Safari (Eli) who is a performing artist and also a musician. She is 1/5 of the band called the Psalms. In collaborating with a voice artist, Kulcha hopes to explore a new type of sound. This performance will include new and rearranged music, incorporating the traditional pesindhen singing methods from Javanese music, the beautiful ornamental style of traditional Malay voice as well as spoken word.
