Tributes have been pouring in for the late Ryuichi Sakamoto.

On 2 April, it was announced that the esteemed Japanese composer had passed away at the age of 71 following a battle with cancer on 28 March. 

In a post on his official website, Sakamoto's international management team KAB America Inc. wrote: "While undergoing treatment for cancer discovered in June 2020, Sakamoto continued to create works in his home studio whenever his health would allow. He lived with music until the very end."

During his illustrious career, which spanned five decades, the Academy Award-winning musician became a well-known name in the film industry thanks to his contributions to films such as Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence, The Last Emperor, The Sheltering Sky, and more recently, The Revenant.

Outside of the world of film, Sakamoto released solo albums including 1978's Thousand Knives, 1986's Futurista, and 1999's BTTB, was part of the Japanese electronic outfit Yellow Magic Orchestra, and was regarded as a trailblazer of electro music.
